Alternative Oil Technology
By Michael L Leigh
While oil has been used to produce useful energy for many years now there are a few new takes on how we can squeeze even more out of this resource than before. There are two major ideas I would like to cover in this article. The first is getting more use out of existing oil refineries and the second is how oil can be replaced entirely with a synthetic oil.
You probably have not heard of a geobioreactor before but they are the latest technology to help with oil demand and get every last bit of use we can out of it. Refineries typically leave somewhere around 25% of the oil in a well underground because as the well gets lower the cost to pump goes up. This means at some point it costs more to get out of the ground than people are paying for it. The idea behind a geobioreactor is to use bacteria planted into the well to convert the remaining oil into methane. This methane gas will be easy to extract and can be easily used as a fuel.
On the other side scientists have been working to use bacteria that will be able to break down biomass directly into hydrocarbons. Existing research has successfully converted biomass into gasoline. Hopefully further research and technology will allow us to produce the full spectrum of hydrocarbons currently used to produce fuels and other materials like plastic. Additional studies have shown that plastic can be broken down in the same way using bacteria to produce bio oil that can be used in all the same ways as traditional crude oil. However, since plastic is the fuel source it is simply using existing hydrocarbons and converting them back into an original form.
